It is not enough to say
“We had our day”.
It is not enough to agree
We passed our time agreeably.
It is not even enough
To lavish love
On every single second
Of which our lives are reckoned.
It is not for us to assert
Life’s worth;
As though a mortal could
Declare that life is good.
It is our part to adore;
To humble ourselves before
A daisy, to declare
Ourselves unworthy of the air.
It is our part to applaud;
To be over-awed
And utterly swept away
Like a child on Christmas Day.
And to petition Heaven
One day to be given
The unimaginable power
To truly appreciate a flower.
